연담공 묘소(蓮潭公 墓所)

[정의] 충청북도 청주시 상당구 명암동에 있는 곽예(郭預, 1232~1286)의 묘. [관련인물] 곽예는 고려 고종(高宗)때 문과에 장원 급제하여 좌승지 등 여러 관직을 거쳤으며, 충렬왕(忠烈王) 때 성절사로 원나라에 가는 도중에 죽었다. 시문에 능했으며 당대의 명필로도 이름이 높았다. [변천] 본래 충청북도 청원군 북이면 대율리에 있었는데, 1975년 국토개발지구로 지정됨에 따라 지금의 위치로 옮겼다. [위치] 상당구 명암동 명암약수터 뒤편 좌측 능선에 있다. 초행에는 지나치기가 쉽다 명암약수터에서 산길로 10여메타가다보면 좌측에 솔밭식당간판이 있는곳으로 오르게 되면 묘로 오르는 계단이 있다 신도비는 훼밀리타운안에 있다 상당사는 길을 따라 계속 500메타정도 오르면 된다 [형태] 봉분의 높이는 1.5m, 봉분의 지름은 3.9m로 묘역은 대략 256㎡이다. 봉분 앞에는 상석이 있으며, 묘역 좌우에는 높이 1.5m의 석인상이 배치되어 있고 봉분 오른쪽에 2기의 묘표가 있다. [금석문] 묘소 입구에 1884년에 세운 신도비가 있다. 방형대좌 위에 높이 176㎝, 폭 61㎝, 두께 32㎝의 오석비신을 세우고 옥개석을 얹었는데, 비문은 독립운동가 김복한(金福漢)이 지었고 오영근이 썼다. [현황] 충청북도 기념물 제20호로 지정·관리되고 있다.

This is the tomb of Gwak Ye(Yeondamgong, 1232-86), a statesman of Goryeo(918-1392) who served kings Gojong(1213-59), Wonjong(1259-74) and King Chungnyeol(1274-1308). He was dispatched to Japan by King Wonjong to present the government's protest against Japanese piracy and to demand the return of Korean prisoners. Later, he was sent to the court of Yuan China as a royal envoy by King Chungnyeol and died on his way back to Korea. Gwak was renowned for his excellence in literature, and his calligraphy was regarded as the best of his era. He was also a scholar respected by such classic authorities as Ikjae and Hoam. He also advocated the protection of cattle and horses from being slaughtered. His tomb was originally located in Daeyul-ri, Bugi-myeon, Cheongwon-gun before it was moved here. There are now two gravestones, a stone table, stone guardians and a stele of the kind erected for high ranking government officials.
